Spinal Manipulation: Light Force On the Spine

By Philip Vincent

A licensed and talented chiropractor performs spinal manipulation so as to align the spine back to its ordinary anatomical position. A chiropractor applies gentle force on the vertebral column, either manually or mechanically. Expertise and knowledge of the chiropractic therapists are required in order to stop complication and extra injury to the backbone.

The primary functions of the spine are to protect the spine and to carry the weight of the upper body of an individual. When there is spinal disfigurement, the nerves within the backbone are compressed causing irritation, which later produces assorted physical discomforts and illnesses. In ready to relieve and alleviate pain, the backbone must be returned to its standard position.

Some of the people are questioning the safety of manipulating the spine, particularly in the medicinal field. Any wrong manipulation can end up in life-threatening condition like immobility and paralysis. In chiropractics, only a licensed and accomplished chiropractor can perform spinal manipulation. With the usage of his or her hands, mild pressure is applied on the spinal area.

Research regarding spinal manipulation has been conducted to substantiate the efficiency and effectiveness of spinal corrections in reducing and alleviating pain. Patients with physical discomforts, for example neck and back pain, are requested to go through chiropractic treatment. After several sessions of chiropractic treatment, these patients were evaluated according to the discomfort level. Most patients said that chiropractic care reduced the discomfort and restore good posture.

Spinal manipulation is done thru trying a quick yet gentle pressure on the backbone till the vertebrae is back to its place. Apart from the hands of a chiropractor, a mechanical device can also be used during spinal manipulation. Both strategies employed in fixing the backbone are regarded as safe because the chiropractor controls the amount of force applied.

There are some misapprehensions regarding spinal manipulation. A few of the people think that a strong thrust on the spinal area is applied causing a popping sound. Well, this is not true at all. Using severe force could cause stress and damages to the spine. Damaging the spine is the last thing a chiropractor will do, that is why mild and tender pressure is applied.

The target of applying light pressure on the backbone is to stop extra injury to the spine and relieve physical discomforts. Chiropractors also maintain that when the spine is in its normal position, the body can heal by itself. Spinal manipulation can relieve pain, reduce muscle spasm and stiffness, enhances mobility and range of motion, and promotes physical health.
