What You Should Find Out About Opium Rehabilitation

By Ben Pate

Opium is a very addictive narcotic that is derived from the seedpods of a flower known as poppy. This drug can either be injected, eaten or smoked. It usually creates tolerance in the users and therefore, he or she has to use it continuously to feel its effect. Opium withdrawal is very painful and addicts of the drug have to use it more often to stop the pain. When compared to other opiates such as codeine and heroin, the addiction of this drug is usually hard to overcome. It can only be solved with the help of professional intervention. Here are some of the opium clinic techniques.

Detoxification

The treatment process involves a series of procedures the first being detoxification. This means that victim has to first eradicate any contents of the drug in his or her system. The eradication process is quick though sometimes it can run for several days. During this procedure ,the individual is usually affected by factors such as hallucinations, vomiting, chills, insomnia and diarrhea. Some other victims usually suffer from muscle spasms and physical pain. Though it can only be used for extreme cases, methadone is the best medication for such conditions.

Twelve-Step Program

The other form of treatment is the twelve-step program. Once the addiction is eradicated, the dependence remains in the mind. This process involves those affected congregating and discussing on how best to overcome the problem. It also involves a three-month training period.

Therapy

The addicts can also opt to seek family drug counseling sessions. In this program, the victim will be counseled, taught new ways to deal with stress and undergo therapy related to education and behavior. This is facilitated and effective because the therapist shows the victims that consumption of the drug is caused by how the patient thinks and not caused external factors.

Staying Sober

Most of the people suffering from addiction need support in order for them to regain their normal lifestyles. Others however need education or training which will enable them to secure jobs to take their minds off other minor issues. This means that for the medication to be a success, there has to be long-term support.

Overcoming Temptation

The client has to feel that he is in control of all things and not being overwhelmed by many things he cannot do. When the patient goes through the twelve-step program, he will be taught how to behave when they find themselves in a tempting situation. This can include be in environments with those using the drug or when feeling the urge to take the drug.

Naltrexone

Other doctors prefer to use a drug called naltrexone that reduces the chances of the patient having relapses. However, it is important to note that this form of treatment is only used on those that have suffered from relapses in the past. It is also the best type of treatment for those that may seem to slip and go back to the addiction after treatment.
